TRINIDAD & TOBAGO
The Caribbean Islands of Trinidad and Tobago are appealing and famous archipelagic state. Located within the southern Caribbean Sea, to the north-east of Venezuela (South America) and close to both Caribbean Islands of Barbados (north-east) and Guyana (south-east), this island nation comprises two main islands, those of Trinidad and Tobago.
The island of Trinidad is considerably larger than its neighbouring island of Tobago and is home to more than 90 percent of the overall population. Trinidad and Tobago have become major tourist destinations in the Caribbean and both known for their South American heritage, being settled by Amerindians and then discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1498, who claimed his first sight was that of the peaks of the Trinity Hills.
Those heading for the islands of Trinidad and Tobago will find much of the action on the island of Trinidad, particularly around the capital city of Port of Spain. North Trinidad is a more urban area of the island, although it has some stunning beaches and lush rainforest. To the south of Trinidad, San Fernando serves as the second city and has grown up around the famous San Fernando Hill. Other prominent cities on Trinidad include Arima, Pointe-a-Pierre, Point Fortin and Point Lisas.
Trinidad has a lively nightlife with bars, nightclubs with calypso, limbo dancers and steel bands. During the carnival season on both islands come alive with live music in the calypso tents. On Tobago, the main calypso bands from Trinidad travel over to perform at Shaw Park, Scarborough and Roxborough. You can find nightlife with something happening everyday of the week.
Scarborough is the largest town on Tobago and is also the capital of the island. Scarborough is on the south-westerly shore of the island and is dominated by its historical Fort King George, which dates back hundreds of years. The white sandy beaches around Pigeon Point and also Englishman's Bay are especially well known on Tobago, as is scuba diving at Buccoo Reef and along the coast of Speyside.
Apart from the beautiful beaches on Tobago, sailing is another outdoor attraction and allows tourists to enjoy a different view of the island's Caribbean coastline. Both towns of Scarborough and Plymouth also contain some excellent tourist attractions, the latter of which is where to you find the Arnos Vale Waterwheel and an interesting sugar cane heritage.
Tourism on Tobago is considerably smaller and less developed than the island of Trinidad, although the westerly beaches are stunningly beautiful, and the waters noticeably clearly than those of Trinidad. On both islands of Trinidad and Tobago you can find something for everyone.
