ST MARTIN
The Caribbean island of Saint Martin is located in the northeast of the Caribbean, approximately 300 km (186 miles) east of Puerto Rico. The island is divided roughly 60/40 between France and the Netherlands; however, the Netherlands side of (Saint Maarten) has the larger population.
Between the two sides of the island there are 37 stunning beaches to choose from, each different with its attractions. Those on the French side are more secluded and more conducive to quiet, relaxation and privacy.
Many of the resorts have their own stretch of beach, but the ones that are more difficult to get to are especially worth exploring. Some of the most spectacular beaches are hugged by rugged cliffs and have dramatic landscapes.
One of the most popular beaches is at Grand Case, and is alive with local culture, while the Anse Marcel beach tends to be a favourite with families. St Martin’s Orient Bay is particularly enticing for its Caribbean white sand, its underwater marine reserve with a coral reef that is great for snorkelling, and the many varieties of water sports that are on offer.
On the French side you will find a yearly carnival which is held just before Lent. You can find many events and attractions days leading up to the big festivities at the carnival grounds just outside Marigot. The Dutch side of the island also have its own carnival which is held in April on their carnival grounds near Philipsburg. The Dutch carnival is home to bands, parades, calypso and rum.
Philipsburg and Marigot are the capitals of the Dutch and French sides of St Martin, and here you can find excellent duty-free shopping. The entire island is duty-free and there are great bargains to be had on most items such as handbags, jewellery and electrics.
When the sun goes down St. Maarten/St. Martin comes alive with some of the most entertaining live music, pubs and clubs you’ll find in the Caribbean.
Nightlife in this 37-square-mile island of St Martin can provide you with some great memories and experiences of a lifetime. This Caribbean island has it all from sizzling clubs to swanky hole-in-the-wall establishments, gambling spots, glitzy gentleman’s clubs and excellent restaurants. There really is something for everyone on this beautiful Caribbean island.
