PUERTO RICO
Puerto Rico is located in the Caribbean, and is situated between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, just east of the Dominican Republic. With an area of 9,104 square kilometers (3,515 square miles), Puerto Rico shares no borders with other nations.
The island of Puerto has stunning crystal-blue sea and coconut palms characteristic of its counterparts, but along with its unmistakable Spanish colonial heritage, the island is today part of the United States Commonwealth.
Puerto Rico is different to most of the Caribbean islands in that it still remains largely undeveloped, except for the coastal region around its capital city of San Juan. Puerto Rico has some of the most magnificent beaches in the Caribbean, featuring coral reefs; most are not affected by mass tourism and remain unspoilt. Most of the beaches are easily reached from the capital and the large holiday resorts because the island is small and compact.
Exploring Puerto Rico is a delight, the roads are excellent and it’s easy to get to the coast as well as inland. Puerto Rico has numerous interesting attractions to suit all, and unrivalled experiences, from the world's largest radio telescope to the magical experience of swimming at night amongst tiny phosphorescent creatures on the offshore island of Vieques.
Historically the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico, like many of the other Caribbean islands, was originally inhabited by Taino Indians until the arrival of Christopher Columbus and the instigation of Spanish rule and settlement. The island has kept its Spanish influence, especially in the capital of San Juan and some of the towns. .
Puerto Rico and especially San Juan have an abundance of fantastic restaurants, catering for all tastes from Spanish to Chinese, French, Greek and Italian; you’ll find something to suit all tastes. The cuisine in Puerto Rico is mainly Spanish based.
