The Pros and Cons of Winter
Many people find the winter months a struggle. Fewer daylight hours are said to cause Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) in more of us than are ever diagnosed, and most of us will catch a common cold at some point during the damp weather. Even for the hardiest of winter lovers, the dark and dreary mornings before work often warrant a groan as you drag yourself from the covers and into the cold air. Of course, the festive season often helps to keep us feeling bright, but frequently Christmas brings its own set of stresses and strains.
There are, however, plenty of good things to look forward to in winter, as well. Many skiing enthusiasts will be celebrating the start of the season with a quick break in the mountains. Holiday companies such as Alpine Elements now offer a convenient service organising short snow-bound excursions have a look at their website for details of their ski weekends. It’s a fun way to beat off those winter blues between one working week and the next.
Another of winter’s greatest pleasures is the feeling of arriving home after a hard day’s work and finally coming in from the cold. When it is dull and dreary outside, suddenly our homes feel like blissful havens of comfort and warmth, and there is nothing better and more relaxing than settling down on the sofa with a cup of tea or hot cocoa to your favourite film or TV series.
In sync with the beginning of the party season, there should be plenty of fun-filled social functions to keep our spirits up. Whether it is the office Christmas party or a long overdue family reunion, doubtless the wine will be flowing providing plenty of festive cheer for all.
Last, but by no means least, even those of us who tend to dread the arrival of the Christmas period will usually appreciate the fabulous food available during this most glutinous of festivals. From the succulent Christmas turkey and the crispy pigs wrapped in blankets, through to a hefty wedge of juicy Christmas pudding or a melt-in-the-mouth mince pie topped with lashings of creamy, brandy sauce, even the most scrooge-like of merry makers are sure to let the odd satisfied smile creep across their faces between mouthfuls of delicious festive fare. |
